01/31/2022: Weekly Briefing
This year I decided to try something new and have a ‘word of the year.’ I listened to this podcast episode where the host talk about using a word to help guide you for the new year.
I decided to choose “impact” because I’ve had trouble prioritizing tasks and how to spend my time. It seems there’s a neverending list of to do’s, projects, and things to do. As a way to organize my time, I’m trying ot use ‘impact’ as a way to put the most impactful at the top.
I’ve also thought about this in the context of managing my money. I’ve realized that sometimes I can be “pennywise and pound foolish.” I will spend more time on requesting a refund for a $10 purchase than spending time on requesting out-of-newtork reimbursements for expensive doctor’s appointments from my insurance (which definitely would save me much much more than $10…).
I don’t know why I do this. Maybe something about being overwhelmed by the cost of health care, or maybe it’s easier to conceptualize $10 than larger amounts.
In any case, I’m using “impact'“ as a way to help me be more conscious of how to spend my efforts and put the things with the biggest impact—whether it be money saved/invested, joy created, number of people affected—at the top of the list.
Has anyone else faced this? Do you have a word or theme for this year?
