Per what I wrote about last week, regulation in big tech continues to be a hot topic… see the Economist’s article about regulation and technology in various markets across the world.

This breakout across market leaders and industries is pretty fascinating, sepcially App Stores, Streaming, and Payments.

Money & Crypto

  • Per what I wrote about last week, regulation in big tech continues to be a hot topic… see the Economist’s article about regulation and technology in various markets across the world

  • "…it may be time to move beyond behavioural finance to “social finance”… and “Does the rise of investment as a mass social activity, pursued for kicks as much as for financial gain, threaten markets’ ability to direct money to productive ends? Yet it is also worth remembering that traders and markets have always been social beasts. A small fortune spent on an encrypted video of a cat may be less a sign of worrying change than a window onto how finance has always worked”

  • Cathy Wood and Ark Investment Management

  • NFT (Non-fungible token) boom

  • Coinbase S-1 filing ahead of IPO, where they mention 43m retail users and 2.8 monthly transacting users (MTU). Very interesting that the MTU has increased 180% relative to only an increase of 34% in verified users between 2019 and 2020

  • Bitcoin back to $43k and WSJ’s what to know before investing in bitcoin

  • IPO: Olo (restaurant SaaS) $100m

  • Fundraising: Skydio (drones) $170m, Public.com $220m

Tech & Science

Etc.

  • Nomadland reminded me of why Frances McDormand is an acting legend. It also reminded me of this piece about CamperForce I shared several years ago in an early Wallet Street newsletter (when it was formerly known as ReadMixx and other iterations…)

  • The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson, about Chicago at the end of the 19th century, has always been on my list of books to read, but I never got around to it. Well I finally did, and I can say that it lives up to the hype. I also recently tore through his other popular & brilliant book “In the Garden of Beasts”, about the American ambassador to Germany in the early 1930s and his family. Highly recommend both of these if you’ve never gotten around to them yet. (I’m serious! I’m even getting the French translated versions for my grandmother who is an avid non-fiction reader.)

♫ Also, here is a great podcast of David Axelrod interviewing the writer of the two above books, Erik Larson.
