While trying to get some reprieve from the heat wave this week, as well as reading about wildfires and the growth in air conditioner demand, I thought about The Fall of Civilizations podcast - a recent favorite of mine (and I recommend it to anyone who is a history buff) where it deep dives into the rise and fall of various civilizations throughout history.
In particular, it examines what led to the downfall of these once robust civilizations…and a thread that I have noticed is how changes in a civilization’s environment can have fatal repurcussions. Whether it is drought, floods, or something else - there seems to frequently be some sort of shift in weather patterns that has severe implications for society.
It led me to think about the long term repercussions of current climate changes. Buying more air conditioners seems to be just the tip of the iceberg…
